Jinx's Story

Early Life

Hikaru Saotome lived in a small village on a unremarkable planet somewhere in the Outer Rim. The village was a mix of race and species and most were not wealthy. Hikaru enjoyed what most of the boys in the village did, climbing in the Arteru hills, play fighting, and watching the fights in the arena. Fighting to the death was banned a long time previously but the boys loved to mimic their favorite fighters and fighting styles.

Almost all Gank children underwent the implant surgery on their 11th birthdays and Hikaru was no exception. He received that standard Gank communication implant that allowed him to talk to other Gank's completely silently. He also chose to replace his left hand with a strong durasteel alloy cybernetic replacement.

Hikaru was very excited to try out his new hand on a particularly difficult climbing wall in the Arteru hills. Successful in the climb Hikaru enjoyed the view of the entire village valley from the top of the peak. At that exact moment a gang of marauding space pirates attacked the village laying waste to the entire valley. Hikaru could do nothing but watch as everything and everyone he knew and loved were consumed in the blaster fire.

After the pirates left, Hikaru raced into the village but found everything destroyed and almost everyone dead. A monk from a nearby monastery took Hikaru and began training him in their ways.

Monks of the Cosmic Balance

The monks that Hikaru went to live with closely followed the Cosmic Balance. The Cosmic Balance taught that for every action there was an equal opposite reaction somewhere in the galaxy. A theft of 3 coins meant the donation of 3 coins elsewhere.

Besides the moral teachings Hikaru was also trained in the martial arts. The monks were made up of many different species so Hikaru managed to learn many unique styles of fighting.

Death and Taxes

Eventually the Imperials sent their tax collectors to the region and began excising unfair taxes from the various villages and outlying establishments, including the monastery.

The monks decided to right this injustice but needed to carefully observe the Balance in the undertaking. They didn't want to take the tax collector's life but needed a way to influence him into leaving them alone. Some of the monks were skilled surgeons and proposed surgically altering the tax collectors brain to make him more open to suggestion. Of course in order to maintain balance while “destroying” the tax collectors mind they would need a mind to be restored.

Hikaru volunteered to undertake a surgery to restore the area of his brain taken by the communications implant. Hikaru hadn't used it in years as all the Ganks were destroyed by the pirates. This would keep the Balance between actions and completely justify the monks in their plans.

The next time the tax collector came the monks captured him and began the surgery. Hikaru also began the surgery at the same time. Unfortunately something went wrong and Hikaru's neural pathways were damaged and the comm removal failed. The tax collector also suffered complications and bled out on the table. The monks were extremely worried now as the Balance was upset.

Hikaru awoke from the surgery with a new clarity. The Balance, while always being difficult to discern, made perfect sense to him now. The ebb and flow of Balancing came easy and Hikaru rushed to the rest of the monks to tell them the exciting news. When he found them around the dead body of the tax collector Hikaru was shocked. He had never seen a murder before, even if it wasn't intended.

Even with his new found Balance clarity this was the most difficult discernment he ever had to make. Fleeing the scene he ran to his room, gathered what meager belongings he had and ran away from the monastery. As he ran he struggled with what had happened. A man was dead although not by purposeful design. The man was evil, or at least acted with no empathy as he stole from the poor. Were the monks justified? According to the Balance, a life would be saved now, somewhere in the universe. But what if the universe wanted Hikaru to carry out its will? This made sense. He could see clearly that his life's events led to this moment. He was the instrument of the universe.

Romantics on Ryloth

After fleeing the monastery Hikaru bought passage on a trading starship and ended up on Ryloth. In order to survive Hikaru started hiring himself out as a guard on various legal and illegal ventures. Often Hikaru thought about the life he felt he must save. He knew he was called to restore the Balance but it was an important event and the person he saved must be important as well.

One particular trip on Ryloth his work brought him to the household of the local gangster Yunn'sara. In typical criminal and Twi'lek fashion he had 'contracted' dancers, slaves really, one whom Hikaru started developing feelings for. Aayn'aren was the most beautiful thing Hikaru had ever seen and totally off limits. After many clandestine conversations in the halls of Yunn'sara's mansion Hikaru and Aayn'aren plotted an escape from Ryloth. Unfortunately Yunn'sara learned of this attempt and sent Aayn'aren on a transport to one of his offworld locations. The gangster also sent a hit squad to terminate Hikaru.

Hikaru was brought before Yunn'sara and was told that because of his actions Aayn'aren was killed and he would never see her again. In an uncommon rage Hikaru attacked Yunn'sara and his henchmen, killing every last one of them. In his grief he knew that Aayn'aren's life was the one the universe was telling him to save. He had failed. He knew that the Balance was off and must be corrected.

Onward and Balanced

After the events of Ryloth, Hikaru left and began wandering the stars. Traveling from place to place he attempted to keep the Balance as closely as possible. The malfunctioning comm implant kept sending Hikaru signals, like whispers which guided him in his Balancing. His Force sensitivity also grew completely unaware to himself. He underwent various cybernetic enhancements as well. His purpose was to bring Balance to the galaxy and maybe justice for those who could not protect themselves, just like his dear Aayn'aren. During his adventures he hooked up with various crews, both legal and illegal, and earned the nickname 'Jinx'. Not exactly a compliment he took it on anyways.

Jinx had learned about the mysterious Jedi and Sith factions, at least as legends and agreed with other Cosmic Balance followers that they both brought imbalance to the cosmos. He didn't believe in the Force and blamed the legends of adding it to the stories to make them more mystical. He learned the mantra's of both the Jedi and the Sith and decided to craft his own.
