Le'ela was captaining another ship, when it crashed nearby Gold Creek on Silas. One crew member, Jimowitz, was badly injured. The town turned hostile, and they were forced to leave before Jim could heal. In his place, they took on a young local named Sma'alo.
A few months later, something terribly happened, killing the entire crew, save for Le'ela who blames herself for the tragedy.
She returned to Gold Creek to deliver the news to Sma'alo's mother. She flew into a rage, and swore vengeance on Le'ela. Distraught, the Caamasi sought comfort at a local bar instead of searching out Jimowitz. After a couple drinks, an ugly scene developed and Le'ela found herself being run out of town again.
Le'ela was understandably nervous when the Cheery Butler was given instructions to deliver a package to Gold Creek. Apprehensive though she was, part of her hoped this would afford her the chance to seek the forgiveness of Sma'laa and Jimowitz. She quickly discovered that her former crew member blamed her for all of the grief that had befallen him and was in no way interested in offering forgiveness. Sma'laa had disappeared and hadn't been heard from in some time.
Greebus, the local despot who was responsible for all the misery in Gold Creek, killed Jimowitz who was plotting an uprising. With all access to forgiveness cut off, Le'ela was left adrift in her own guilty feelings.
